Exact Sciences, a leader in cancer screening, has partnered with award-winning Hispanic actor and philanthropist Carlos Ponce to promote awareness about colorectal cancer and the importance of early screening in the Hispanic community. This partnership includes a Spanish-language advertising campaign, personal stories, and educational resources in English and Spanish to help address health disparities.
Colorectal cancer is treatable in about 90% of cases when detected early, but screening rates among Hispanic adults remain low. Only 49% of eligible adults aged 45+ follow recommended screening guidelines, and the rates are even lower among those aged 45-49. Additionally, the Hispanic community has a higher percentage of colorectal cancer cases in individuals under 50 compared to non-Hispanic whites.
Ponce, a passionate advocate for health awareness, highlights the cultural challenges that often prevent open discussions about health in Hispanic families. “As Latinos, we often avoid health topics to appear strong or avoid worrying our families,” said Ponce. “But knowledge is power, and understanding testing options like colon cancer screening helps us ensure we’re present for our loved ones.”
Exact Sciences’ Cologuard® test offers a safe, effective, and non-invasive at-home screening option with no special preparation required. Dr. Xavier Llor, a gastroenterologist at Yale Medicine, stresses the importance of early detection, recommending screenings start at age 45 for those at average risk.
“Our partnership with Carlos Ponce reflects our commitment to improving colon cancer screening rates in underserved communities,” said Jeremy Truxal, VP of Marketing at Exact Sciences. By promoting awareness and providing Spanish-language resources, this initiative aims to increase screening rates and improve survival outcomes in the Hispanic community. Adults 45+ at average risk are encouraged to ask their doctors if Cologuard is right for them.
