Starting October 1, citizens in Abu Dhabi will be required to undergo genetic testing as part of the premarital screening program, according to the Department of Health (DoH). This service will be available at 22 primary care centers across Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra, and Al Ain, with results provided within 14 days. The genetic screening tests for 570 genes linked to over 840 autosomal recessive genetic disorders, helping couples identify if they carry mutations that could potentially affect their future children.
Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, Executive Director of the Research and Innovation Centre at DoH, emphasized that this initiative aims to prevent genetic diseases and enhance early intervention. The process includes diagnostics, personalized genetic counseling, and reproductive medicine solutions for at-risk couples.
Genetic disorders that can be prevented through this program include conditions causing vision and hearing loss, blood clotting disorders, developmental delays, organ dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, and seizures. During the pilot phase, over 800 couples in Abu Dhabi were tested, with 86% achieving genetic compatibility. Only 14% required further intervention, highlighting the program's effectiveness in helping couples make informed family planning decisions.
