Medical technology leader Medtronic has launched its first large-scale IT capability centre outside the U.S. in Hyderabad, Telangana. This new Global IT (GIT) centre, co-located with the Medtronic Engineering & Innovation Center (MEIC), represents a $60 million investment and is projected to create 300 jobs over the next 3-5 years. Industries and IT Minister D. Sridhar Babu inaugurated the facility, with U.S. Consul General Jennifer Larson and other dignitaries in attendance.
The GIT centre will focus on advanced technologies such as Cloud Engineering, Data Platforms, Digital Health applications, Hyper Automation, and AI/ML. Key competencies at the centre include Cloud and DevOps, Advanced Analytics and Visualization, Integration and Middleware, Full Stack Engineering, Robotic Process Automation, Process and Data Mining, Agile Program Management, Process Excellence and Business Analysis, as well as IT Security and Compliance. These capabilities aim to boost productivity, manage risks, and drive growth in healthcare technology, according to Medtronic.
“India offers one of the best talent pools for IT, and we look forward to leveraging this skillset,” said SVP and CIO Rashmi Kumar. She emphasized the centre's role in Medtronic's global workforce plans, noting that the company's global IT team consists of 2,000 members, mostly based in the U.S.
The GIT centre is expected to benefit from MEIC’s strong presence and experience in Hyderabad, particularly during its hiring phase. There is likely to be some overlap in the work of GIT and MEIC, enhancing their collaborative efforts.
Medtronic's commitment to Hyderabad began in 2020 with the establishment of the engineering and innovation centre with a $160 million investment, which was expanded by an additional $300 million. The expanded R&D facility was inaugurated by Minister Sridhar Babu in February this year. MEIC plans to fast-track the hiring of 400 more people, increasing its headcount to 1,500, according to Vice-President and MEIC Site Leader Divya Joshi.
Earlier addressing the gathering, Minister Sridhar Babu highlighted Telangana's vibrant innovation ecosystem, noting that Medtronic's increased investments underscore the state's progressive policies and robust talent pool. He reiterated the government’s commitment to supporting the growth of the medical technologies sector.
