The Qatar Precision Health Institute (QPHI), a research center under Qatar Foundation (QF), hosted a special event to unveil groundbreaking genomic data and announce new research initiatives. Held at QF’s headquarters, the event brought together key figures from Qatar’s healthcare and research sectors, including Sheikh Dr. Mohammed Al-Thani (MoPH), Dr. Khalid Fakhro (Sidra Medicine), Dr. Hilal Lashuel (QF), Dr. Ahmed Elmagarmid (QCRI), and Dr. Omar Albagha (QBRI).
Dr. Said Ismail, Acting President and Chief Scientific Operations Officer at QPHI, highlighted the release of Qatar’s largest genomic dataset, calling it a transformative step in precision health. “This data lays the foundation for groundbreaking research, positioning Qatar as a hub for genomics and translational medicine,” he stated.
The event showcased the 25,000 Genome Release, with QPHI’s Lead Bioinformatician, Dr. Chadi Saad, explaining how the dataset will accelerate research in cancer genetics, cardiovascular diseases, and mental health, utilizing advanced tools to reduce research costs and time. Dr. Eleni Fthenou introduced an updated data catalog designed to enhance access for researchers, fostering innovation through streamlined exploration and analysis.
Warehouse Specialist Sneha P. Chandran presented new tools enabling researchers to filter data by demographics, build cohorts, and conduct advanced analyses. Dr. Hamdi Mbarek, Director of Research and Partnerships, announced the second round of the Qatar Precision Health Research Consortium (QPHRC), focusing on genomics, AI, and strategic projects across multiple health fields.
Dr. Mbarek emphasized the importance of multi-institutional collaboration and capacity-building, inviting researchers to leverage genomic data for impactful discoveries. He thanked key partners, including MoPH, Sidra Medicine, Qatar University, and others, whose support drives QPHI’s vision of transforming healthcare through precision medicine, benefiting both Qatar and the global community.
