Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh inaugurated the Centre for Advanced Genomics & Precision Medicine at AIIMS Jammu, highlighting the transformative impact of gene therapy. He emphasised that genomic advancements would enable personalised treatment approaches rather than a one-size-fits-all method, ensuring higher efficacy and specificity.
The Minister stated that gene therapy offers customised disease management, where even patients with the same condition—such as cancer or kidney disease—could receive different treatments based on their genetic profiles. Set up in collaboration with 4baseCare, the centre aims to revolutionise personalised medicine by integrating genomic research into targeted treatment strategies.
AIIMS Jammu now stands among India's leading medical research institutions, leveraging AI-driven diagnostics and genomic data for early disease detection, optimised treatment, and reduced trial-and-error in prescriptions. Experts noted that this facility would advance precision oncology, cardiovascular genomics, and genetic screening for rare disorders.
Dr. Singh highlighted India's unique genetic diversity, underscoring the need for an India-specific genomic database. He mentioned ongoing efforts that have mapped 10,000 healthy individuals across 99 communities, aiming to address country-specific health challenges. He also stressed that making precision medicine affordable is a key goal, with AIIMS Jammu working to integrate these treatments into public healthcare through indigenous research and government-backed biotech initiatives.
Precision medicine, he noted, could be a game-changer in cancer treatment, shifting from conventional chemotherapy to targeted therapies. Genomic medicine is also crucial for tackling lifestyle diseases like diabetes, which is increasingly affecting younger populations in India.
AIIMS Jammu Director Dr. Shakti Gupta praised Dr. Singh for his support, while AIIMS President Dr. YK Gupta and AIIMS New Delhi Director Dr. M. Srinivas also addressed the gathering.
