Novo Nordisk Education Foundation (NNEF), a non-profit established by Novo Nordisk India, has partnered with Ravindra Nath Tagore (RNT) Medical College, Udaipur, to create a 'Sickle Cell Wellness Hub' dedicated to individuals with Sickle Cell Disease (SCD). This initiative aligns with India's National Sickle Cell Anemia Elimination Mission 2023, targeting the eradication of SCD by 2047.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Vipin Mathur, Principal of RNT Medical College, and Vikrant Shrotriya, Managing Trustee of NNEF, with key medical professionals in attendance. The Wellness Hub will offer comprehensive care, including diagnosis, treatment, monitoring, dietary guidance, and counseling, particularly benefiting Rajasthan's tribal communities, who are disproportionately affected by SCD. Approximately 1 in 86 births among India's Scheduled Tribes (ST) communities are impacted by this genetic disorder.
The partnership aims to enhance existing SCD care infrastructure, making it more child-friendly and strengthening capacity-building among healthcare providers. Educational and awareness programs will also be conducted for caregivers and frontline health workers.
Dr. Lakhan Poswal, Nodal Officer of the SCD Center of Excellence at RNT Medical College, emphasized the significance of this collaboration in addressing SCD's burden in Rajasthan. The initiative seeks to promote early screening and provide robust healthcare infrastructure, improving the quality of life for those affected by SCD through education, awareness, and access to advanced care.
