In a groundbreaking development, researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur have unveiled a cutting-edge system that leverages smartphones for rapid and hassle-free glucose level testing. This innovative solution bridges the gap between traditional paper-based analytical devices (PADs) and modern mobile technology, promising to revolutionize glucose monitoring for individuals. The newly developed system seamlessly connects a PAD to any Android smartphone via a dedicated application. This integration allows for the swift detection of glucose levels within the range of 10−40 mM, offering users convenient access to real-time testing results.
PADs have long been recognized for their portability and ability to conduct on-the-spot biochemical analysis. However, they typically require specific lighting conditions to function effectively. The IIT Jodhpur team has overcome this limitation by devising a system that enables PADs to operate under virtually all lighting conditions, ensuring reliable performance regardless of environmental factors. One of the system’s standout features is its affordability and eco-friendliness. With a current lab cost of approximately Rs 10, the device is designed to be accessible to the masses. Moreover, the research team is working towards reducing the cost even further to Rs 5 during mass production, making it an economically viable option for widespread adoption.
To ensure compatibility across a wide range of smartphones with varying camera optics, the researchers employed artificial glucose samples and machine learning algorithms. This approach enables the system to deliver consistent and accurate results, regardless of the smartphone model or camera specifications. Dr. Rajesh Kumar, lead researcher on the project, expressed enthusiasm about the system’s potential impact on healthcare accessibility. “By integrating PAD technology with smartphones, we aim to empower individuals with the ability to monitor their glucose levels conveniently and affordably,” he remarked.
