Lt Gen Daljit Singh, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) and Senior Colonel Commandant of the Army Medical Corps, inaugurated the new Genome Sequencing Lab at Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune on June 27, 2024. Equipped with cutting-edge Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technology, including advanced "Nextseq 2000" and "Miniseq" analysers, the lab marks a significant advancement for AFMS.
NGS technology holds vast potential across healthcare sectors such as inherited diseases, oncology, transplant medicine, and reproductive health. Its precise capabilities enable AFMS to diagnose rare genetic disorders, predict malignancies molecularly, and support organ transplantations effectively. This is AFMS's second NGS facility after the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) in New Delhi, launched earlier this year on January 23, 2024.
The Genome Sequencing Lab at AFMC Pune not only strengthens AFMS's capabilities but also contributes to broader medical research and diagnostics. It promises to drive innovation in medical science, ultimately improving healthcare outcomes—a pivotal aspect of national development. The facility underscores AFMS's commitment to advancing medical knowledge and enhancing healthcare delivery, benefiting both military personnel and the wider community with groundbreaking research and state-of-the-art diagnostics.
