In her inaugural address to the Rajya Sabha on July 2, 2024, Sudha Murty, noted philanthropist and author, emphasized the urgent need for a government-funded program to prevent cervical cancer. Murty advocated for vaccinating girls aged 9 to 14, stressing that prevention through vaccination is crucial. She suggested that similar to the COVID-19 vaccination efforts, government intervention could potentially reduce the current cost of the cervical cancer vaccine from ₹1,400 to ₹700-800. Murty's proposal aims to ensure that young girls in India have access to effective preventive healthcare measures against cervical cancer.
